TRAVEL TIPS IN EUROPE:
- provided by Gabriella Bedoyan, World Traveler
1. Use easyjet.com or ryanair.com to travel within europe. it's cheaper than the train or sometimes even bus.
2. If you are uncomfortable with hostels, rent an apt. It's a great way to get local and often times a better deal than a hotel. This way you have a kitchen, bathroom, laundry, security, and definitely more freedom.
3. When travelling and doing a lot of walking, get a shoulder bag that wraps around your body. Women, no purses that will keep slipping off your shoulder. That way you won't be easy prey. Backpacks are fine, although zippers are easily opened when in a crowded subway, bus, or visual event.
4. Stay away from "American places". What's the point of travelling??? Find an authentic restaurant or pub, not a sports bar where they play Baseball on the TV's.
5. Always challenge yourself out of your confort zone.
6. Grocery store during the day, and eat out in the evenings. Save that money for a great meal. Tap water is safe in most countries, but consult your guide book or local country websites.
7. Do one thing touristy, and one not touristy. It makes things more fun and you feel like you're having a unique cultural experience, rather than the turbo, generic trip to Paris. (for example)
8. Not all places need tips, so consult your guide before tipping your taxi driver. Why tip when it's not expected?? Save that extra cash for a local tasty treat.
9. Walk as much as you can, or rent a bike. Don't be lazy! You'll miss the special moments...
10. A cheap way to see the city is to hop on a bus and ride it until it brings you back to point one.
11. Always pack an extra duffle bag or something easily "squished" You'll always come back with extra things....
12. Always bargain with street venders. They expect it!! Even in small boutiques and independents...
13. Be careful with bottled water being brought to tables or baskets of bread when you haven't asked for it. They will charge you. "Tourist tricks"
